We’re pleased to announce that Arts NSW will be supporting the Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music again this year.

2013 Tyalgum Festival

Friday-Sunday 6-8 September
DIARY DATES
Virginia Mason
President, Tyalgum festival of Classical Music
Our lovely Alex has finally decided that it is time to resign, and that she could leave the Festival in the very capable hand of US, the long time and devoted voluntary management committee. There is no doubt that Alex's extraordinary administrative talents, over many years, have helped to raise the Tyalgum Festival to the prestigious and respected level with which it is regarded today.
This year we are again so fortunate to have as Musical Director, Jenni Hibbard. Her interesting thematic planning and choice of artists are the cornerstone around which we all work. After all, without the music, there would not be a festival. This year is no exception.
The 2013 programme is based on the history of the piano. From it's early beginnings to our wonderful Steinway grand . There will also be a focus on women composers and about time too as this has been a very neglected area! You might hear Beethoven's Arch Duke Trio, modern and ancient harps, exciting gypsy music for the cymbalum and the much feted Camerata of St.Johns Orchestra. There's lots more that Jenni has chosen for us, and the completed programme will be announced very shortly.

Notes
A glamorous bundle of energy in the form of Jenny Unwin has joined us as our Project Manager. Jenni is very experienced in all areas of events management. Jenny is also a convener for our Murwillumbah Festival Of Performing Arts. Possessing a lovely alto voice, she has been a longtime member of the Murwillumbah Philharmonic Choir. She just loves music and is completely committed to keeping the quality and high standard of our event.
Alex will, of course, be a very hard act to follow. Everyone will miss her superb and brilliant organisational skills, bubbly greeting and very welcoming smile. All the Management committee, and I am sure all of you, our patrons, will wish her well and the best of luck in whatever future field of endeavour she chooses.
I extend a special invitation to enjoy our Friends Concert on the afternoon of Sunday 26th May at Tyalgum Hall. Performing will be the Kurilpa Quartet. Their program includes Bartok's Rumanian Dances and String Quartet, and Eric Griswald's Bluegrass String quartet.
Our Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music weekend will be held on September 6th ,7th and 8th.
Looking forward to seeing you all there!
The 2013 Friends’ Concert will be dedicated to Carmel Kaine, wife of founding Music Director John Willison who sadly died recently in England.
Carmel was a driving force behind many performances of both professional and student groups from the start of the Tyalgum Festival. She was a greatly respected violinist of international standing, having performed all over the world, and taught at the Menuhin School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Queensland Conservatorium.
Australian by birth, and a child prodigy, Carmel spent most of her working life in England, before coming back to take a post of Head of Strings at Q Con.
Our thoughts are with John and their daughter Katherine and her young family.

JOEL WOODS IS GUEST PERFORMER AT MAY 26th FRIENDS’ CONCERT

Classical guitarist Joel Woods will join the Kurilpa Quartet to play a piece by Robert Davidson, a Brisbane composer who depicts landscape in soundscape. Davidson started to do this after the Tyalgum Festival commissioned a work from him some years ago. This commission inspired Robert to move his composition in a new direction and many works have resulted from this - including the Brindabellas near Canberra. The work "Landscape" to be played at the May concert in Tyalgum is one such piece, inspired by the volcanic nature of the areas both here and the Glasshouse Mountains.
Davidson’s original commissioned work titled simply 'Tyalgum', has been played around the world to great acclaim and has helped put our festival on the musical map. It is mentioned in key musical publications and research papers as being a key work in the contemporary repertoire.
Woods is a young classical guitarist in the early stages of his musical career spanning a variety of genres including classical, jazz, flamenco and folk music.
In 2012 Joel graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium with a Master of Music studies in guitar performance. He has performed as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Mandolins Victoria 2013 Orchestra, Queensland Mandolin Orchestra and as a Spanish guitarist with the "Portraits of Spain" exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery. Joel is also the conductor and musical director for the Queensland Youth Mandolin Orchestra and Brisbane Mandolin Ensemble and leads the guitar section for the Queensland Mandolin Orchestra.
