Ed Ayres
is a writer, music teacher and broadcaster. He was born on the White Cliffs of Dover and began playing music when he was six years old. He studied music in Manchester, Berlin and London, played professionally in the UK and Hong Kong and moved to Australia in 2003. Ed is the presenter of ABC Classic’s Weekend Breakfast.
Ed has written four books - Cadence, about his journey by bicycle from England to Hong Kong with only a violin for company, Danger Music, describing his year teaching music in Afghanistan, Sonam and the Silence, a children’s book about the importance of music, and his most recent, Whole Notes - Life Lessons in Music. Ed’s books have been shortlisted for a number of prestigious awards, including the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards.
INTRODUCING THE ARTISTS FOR THE 2023 TYALGUM MUSIC FESTIVAL
Jason Barry-Smith
has studied in Brisbane, Munich, London and Rome which led him to a singing career on the Australian and New Zealand concert, music theatre, and operatic stage. With almost 40 roles in his repertoire, he’s performed in some of Opera Queensland’s most successful productions since 1995, and he’s also performed for the Brisbane Biennial, Brisbane Cabaret Festival, Opera Australia (Opera on the Beach), the Tokyo Arts Foundation, the State Opera of South Australia, New Zealand Arts Festival, and New Zealand Opera. He also created the roles of Aldo in Mimma – A Musical of War & Friendship, Samuel in Electric Lenin for NORPA and Julian in Quartet for the New Zealand Arts Festival. He’s also a well known singing teacher, musical director, arranger, and director who specialises in regional community based arts projects.
Daniel de Borah
is recognised as one of Australia’s foremost musicians, consistently praised for the grace, finesse and imaginative intelligence of his performances. His wide-ranging performance schedule finds him equally at home as concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician.
Since his prize-winning appearances at the 2004 Sydney International Piano Competition, Daniel has given recitals on four continents and toured extensively throughout the United Kingdom and Australia. As a concerto soloist he has appeared with the English Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, Adelaide and Auckland Symphony Orchestras.
Daniel studied at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, the St. Petersburg State Conservatory and the Royal Academy of Music, London. He now lives in Brisbane where he serves as Head of Chamber Music at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University.
Catherine Likhuta
is an Australian based composer and pianist. She holds a Bachelor degree in jazz piano from Kyiv Gliere Music College, a post grad in composition from the Kyiv Conservatory and a PhD in composition from UQ. Catherine’s works have been played throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Brazil and Australia. Her works have been performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, National Radio Orchestra of Ukraine, Ensemble Q and Plexus. To date she has won first prize in the International Horn Society Composition Competition and the 4MBS Kauai Composition Competition and was awarded two grants from The Australia Council.
Limpinwood Ensemble
The original Limpinwood Ensemble was formed thirty-one years ago by violinists Carmel Kaine and John Willison as the resident ensemble behind the Tyalgum Music Festival.
Four years ago it was reformed by Katharine Willison and Peter Luff under the guise of playing great chamber music with friends. Since then the ensemble has played numerous concerts in Toowoomba, the Sunshine Coast, UQ and in the Brookfield, Pullenvale and Tyalgum Halls. Their repertoire is broad, from Wind Quintets to the large scale chamber works including Stravinsky’s Soldier’s Tale. Individually the musicians hold their own impressive CVs, having played in all the Australian Orchestras and an impressive list of international ones.
They are excited to be bringing the Limpinwood Ensemble home to Tyalgum, and look forward to introducing the audience to new works as well as the much loved classics.

Natsuko Yoshimoto
Born in Japan, violinist Natsuko Yoshimoto has been in great demand as a chamber musician, soloist and a concertmaster and has held positions a a eaderof many of the esteemed chamber groups and orchestras such as the Australian String Quartet, the Grainger Quartet and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, She is currently a member of Ensemble Q and loves exploring the music of both well loved and unknown.
