Concert 1: FESTIVAL OPENING CONCERT

FRIDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER 7.00 PM Tyalgum Community Hall

Celebrate the opening of this year’s festival with an amazing program and a glass of sparkling wine while being introduced to many of our dazzling 2019 festival artists. One of Australia’s most celebrated musicians, soprano Greta Bradman, will perform Strauss’ Four Last Songs with Tinalley Quartet and pianist Anna Grinberg. After the interval Triple Grammy-winning flautist Tim Munro will perform Amy Beth Kirsten’s theatrically engrossing masterpiece, Pirouette on a Moon Sliver and the Viney-Grinberg Piano Duo will perform an arrangement of Stravinsky’s Petroushka.

Concert 2: TINALLEY STRING QUARTET

SATURDAY 7th SEPTEMBER 10.30 AM Tyalgum Community Hall

Internationally acclaimed for its ‘addictive sound’, ‘intuitive’ music making and ‘technical virtuosity’, the Tinalley String Quartet has established itself as one of Australia’s finest string quartets and most awarded classical music exports.

They perform Mendelssohn’s virtuosic Op. 81, Beethoven’s much-loved Op. 18, no. 4, and the world premiere of Mary Finsterer's Dusk.

Concert 3: QUEENSLAND CONSERVATORIUM BRASS ENSEMBLE - THE NEXT GENERATION

SATURDAY 7th SEPTEMBER 1.00 PM Tyalgum Community Hall

Come and hear an immersive sonorous program featuring the 20 piece Queensland Conservatorium Brass Ensemble conducted by Dr. Ben Marks. Investigating the richly resonant acoustics of the Tyalgum Hall, this concert will feature music in-the-round by Giovanni Gabrielli, JS Bach, William Byrd, plus works on stage by Debussy, and Australian composers Frankie Dyson, Moya Henderson and Nicole Murphy.

Concert 4: GRETA BRADMAN IN RECITAL

Art Song Treasures with Greta Bradman,

together with pianist, Anna Grinberg

Soprano Greta Bradman is one of Australia’s most celebrated operatic and concert artists. Joining forces with Israeli-Australian pianist Anna Grinberg this recital will feature Art Song treasures by Felix Mendelssohn, Wagner,  Debussy, de Falla, Rachmaninov and Fanny Mendelssohn. Concert 5: TENZIN CHOEGYAL, MICHAEL ASKILL & KATHERINE PHILP

SATURDAY 7th SEPTEMBER 7.00 PM Tyalgum Community Hall

with Tyalgum Music Festival Percussion Quartet

 

Tenzin Choegyal is an internationally acclaimed Tibetan musician and cultural ambassador who has had a long musical relationship with one of Australia’s leading percussionists, Michael Askill. Together with one of Australia’s most diverse cellists, collaborator Katherine Philp, the trio will lead an evening of transcendent song, and immersive percussive ritual with assistance from Tyalgum Music Festival Percussion Quartet.

Concert 6: VINEY-GRINBERG PIANO DUO

SUNDAY 8th SEPTEMBER 10:30 AM Tyalgum Community Hall

Described in the LA Times as “unforgettable – the most compelling case for the beauty and variety of  piano repertory this reviewer has ever heard”, the Viney-Grinberg piano duo explore the full spectrum of emotion and colour in French piano music, featuring works by Claude Debussy, Cécile Chaminade, Franz Schubert and Maurice Ravel.

Concert 7: CLOSING GALA -- HOLLOWS OUT OF TIME

SUNDAY 8th SEPTEMBER 2.30 PM Tyalgum Community Hall

Camerata Quintet, Erik Griswold, Katherine Philp and Tenzin Choegyal

“Hollows out of Time” was composed by Erik Griswold for Camerata string quartet, with the composer playing prepared piano. Commissioned for the Piano Mill in 2018, it is a series of 11 exquisite miniatures exploring ideas around time and space. The Closing Gala also features Katherine Philp’s arresting arrangements for Tenzin Choegyal and Camerata Quintet, with double bass, plus sublime English Baroque string music by Matthew Locke.

THE ROVING OPERA

Comfort Music, by Alice Chance

 

Tim Munro, Ben Marks and Vanessa Tomlinson join forces to present Alice Chance’s grippingly inventive opera, Comfort Music. Set around the village of Tyalgum using the forces of percussion, brass, winds and a selection of festival singers, expect a scene to pop up anywhere and everywhere. Meet at the Oval to start the adventure. End at the pub where you will enjoy the superb sounds of the Queensland Conservatorium Big Band under the direction of Stephen Newcomb.
